It's cheap, and, you kinda get what you pay for. It's not the worst, but also not the best. We go here every once in a while when we want something cheap and don't know what we have a taste for. Hocheta is good. It's probably my favorite thing there. And the staff is EXTREMELY friendly. It is a bit cafeteria-ish and when you're first seated it feels a little awkward. But, it's okay in general.

Oh god. This restaurant has been so pivotal in my life that it occupies the central position in all of my fond memories of weekend mornings growing up. "Mexico Restaurant" huevos rancheros, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. The sauce, so spicy. The tortillas, so warm. The beans, so chorizo-licious. The chips and salsa, so fresh and flavorful. By your standards, every other restaurant's huevos rancheros are a sad disappointment. The quality is so good, it makes the Folgers coffee they serve taste amazing. The staff is so friendly, I feel like I'm visiting their house. The service is so prompt, you can go in hungry and be full before you even realize you've sat down. If it's too late for breakfast (for you, that is - they serve breakfast all day), the tamales are also a reason to come for lunch or dinner: it's hard enough to find real tamales, and to find them this good is a real feat. Overall, the charm of this restaurant is really the authenticity and the earnestness with which they operate, and it certainly is the best downscale Mexican restaurant I know of.

I eat here once a week. There is something to be said for having the owner and family working in the kitchen. They don't let anything that is not up to their standard leave the kitchen. Everything that I have had here is excellent. I love the chicken soup. Their soup will make anyone feel better. I regularly eat their tacos, tostadas, and enchiladas. Ask about the cop special. It's perfect. It makes me feel good to support a family restaurant. When you find a good place like this, you have to tell people. The decor is lacking, but the personality is here. The staff is always smiling and will often stop to talk to the customers. Oh, It's cheap and they have excellent margaritas!

Went here based off the good reviews on Yelp. Yikes. Not so glad about that. First off, the space is stark white and had a cafeteria look to it & they sell strange fake Precious Moments religious figures by the door. Okay, I can look past all of that for good food. Therein lies the problem. The food was NOT good! The chips were really stale and one of the salsa they gave with the chips tasted kind of like ketchup. I had steak tacos and the meat had a really odd flavor and was tough. My cousin had a chicken burrito suizas and was not pleased with hers either. We did, however, figure out why the chips were so stale. They put the chips in baskets, put the baskets on a big rolling rack, cover the rack with plastic, roll the rack into the dining area and put a few baskets under a warming light so you think they're freshly made. Ick. We all felt queasy after eating here. Won't be back.

I have been coming here for a long time. My son loves the mild salsa it's very kid friendly. My favorite are their steak tacos and horchata drink (sweet rice water)

I went here a few times, and had my usual orders but I do carry out. But from what I've seen of the restaurant... Decor is just okay, nothing spectacular - generic tables and chairs, seems to have a separate party room or spill over if its crowded. Music is played by a juke box I think, not too loud. I usually call in or order at the restaurant, orders at taken fairly okay, and I get what I want. Though times seem to be such that it closes at 8pm or 9pm, so call before going! I usually get burritos and enchiladas with mole. For the burrito, its okay, not like Taco Bell but a bit better, fresher but not as fulfilling as if I got a burrito from El Faro or La Pasadita. I ordered it with steak and it was okay. As for the enchiladas with mole sauce, I got it twice, each, IIRC, with the green and brown mole. The green was a bit salty but good, when the brown or dark brown was chocolatey and a tiny bit sweet - both moles were good. As recall, enchiladas were nothing special, just with cheese, accompanied with refried beans and rice. Good meal, nothing remarkable. Also had the horchata - was good but too sweet. If I had nothing else to go to, I'll come here. Otherwise I'll just make the trip to La Pasadita Express on Elston or the road trip to El Faro in Summit-Argo. It's just okay but nothing awesome.

everyone is always so nice and the food is consistently good. Quality hasnt diminished.in the 5 yrs I have been a customer. Always clean and bright despite being an old building. I care about the food, not the cafeteria tables as someone else mentioned. DELICIOUS steak fajitas for less cash than most mexican restaurants. I love this place; the proprietors acually care about the quality of your experience. I will remain a customer for the consistency of quality.

Wonderful family run restaurant. The Mexican dishes are all excellent. A good Mexican beer goes very well with the salsa and chips. Each plate is exceptional

Home cooked, fast, reasonable, fresh, tasty. Need I say any more? Great food for a great price! Ambiance could use a little work but otherwise the perfect lunch and dinner spot for a family.

  • Reyna M.

Very disappointed with the chicken enchiladas, shrimp diablo served w/ French fries? They seem to have the basic ingredients prepared then depending on what you order they put it together. No effort in the meals it's all bland& tasteless. If you like very bland basic food with no spices them this is the spot..Nothing exciting here. The service and salsa are good.

  • Andy M.

Good service in this average looking Mexican diner. They don't have a lot of decoration in this place but the place is more spacious than it appears on the outside of downtown des Plaines and their food as good and authentic as any other taquiria. The chicken soup is great.

It's a 2.5!!! Plus a half star because I do eat here from time to time. The pozole and menudo is very good, as are the huevos breakfasts and bistek ala Mexicana. Service is always good and very polite...It's just that, you gotta have good chips and sauce...and you MUST MAKE A SERVICEABLE TACO. Or else. Good service, crap tacos, on par with Pepe's...And I mean that as a compliment. :-)

I'm starting out with 2 stars, only because I"m still trying to make sense of the entire experience. We were out looking something different, something mexican........stumbled upon Mexcio Restaurant. I figured the food must be very good for a restaurant to be successful with the bizarre decor of this place.....Florescent lights make it seem almost like a Stanley Kubrick set.....the seating...similar to a cafeteria from the 1970s....only not as nice. Still trying to decide if the walls were a pinkish orange or an orange pink.....and there was an odd odor....not strong....but it did not smell like a restaurant.....I did notice an open door leading to a stairway to a lower level....perhaps to the source of the aroma. The menu lists some very delicious-sounding dishes......unable to decide, we ordered ala carte: Beef taco, pork tamal, enchilada suizas verde and rojo, side of rice and beans... pretty standard fare..... One server to cover the entire place....wasn't busy when we arrived, but about 5 more tables showed up and we knew we weren't going to see much of her again. The food arrived pretty quickly and it was luke warm..... and all of it had obviously been sitting around prior to serving. BLAND.....no other word is necessary. I checked Yelp to see what the rating was and was shocked to see a solid 4 Stars? If I hadn't been so hungry, I suspect I would have rated this place 1 Star. I'm not a big fan of the foo foo mexican restaurants to I prefer the family run places like this.....so I can only assume there is NO other mexican food anywhere near this place.....and I cannot possibly understand any 5 star ratings for this place.... Taco bell is more flavorful and the food is served hot there.....I won't tell people to avoid this place.....but I can't imagine why anyone would eat here more than once.

I ate and reviewed this place in 2011 - after all these years it remains a solid #1 as the worst restuarant experience I have ever had. I was remembering it tonight with my husband...thank you Mexico Restuarant, we trust our instincts a little more these days because of you.

Family owned very casual restaurant that has been in Des Plaines as long as I can remember. Very good Posole served on the weekends only. I also like the Burrito Suiza and the cheese and pepper gordita.

  • Tim T.

The best Mexican breakfast in the universe. Fresh authentic incredible food. The best hot beverage known to man, their Mexican hot chocolate is to die for. Beats anything Starbucks or Rick Bayless has to offer. Salsa great, beans just the way I like them, although Nuevo León ( Pilsen) is slightly better at beans. Service friendly and top notch, the decorating is more like greasy spoon meets Mexican dinner. Very casual.

Great food and good size menu to choose from. The salsa is very good and the chips are usually warm, My go to is the seafood soup.

This place has some interesting twists. First off, chips don't taste any better than theirs. They have a strange, green mole a featuring pumpkin seeds and jalapeno peppers that appealed to my wife, but not so much to me. I never did like pumpkin seeds. But this is a pretty good place. El Famous is still my favorite.

  • Toni D.

Poor decor. Food very bland. Served on cold plates. We had queso fundido and it was swimming in grease. Beans and rice were only warm - not hot. Chimichangas were dry. Will never go back - bill was $36 and we had one soda, ice tea, queso fundido and each had a chimichanga. Terrible. Not sure how they are staying in business.

Clean, freindly and superb! Try their Enchiladas Suizas Verdes, Torta de Milanesa, Menudo, Posole, Taquitos Guadalajara, Agua de Jamaica. Can't go wrong.

Been her a few times, and although I am not a fan of everything, I have to mention the Enchiladas with mole'. Very cheezy, tasty and the mole is excellent. Skip the raw onions, but overall pretty good.

Went here for a birthday dinner with friends. Ordered a taco dinner Al pastor. The tacos were flavorful, the portions were generous and the prices are very reasonable. My wife had tostadas and she was very happy with them. Margaritas were perfect and not too strong or tart. I really had a great experience here and can't even think of one negative comment to share. Stop by this authentic gem, you won't be disappointed!

This was a great place to stop and enjoy lunch. My mom and I went here based on the other Yelp reviews, and I can say we enjoyed it a lot. The only complaint I would make is that the guacamole could use a little bit more spice. However, we mixed in a little of the spicy salsa, and voila! It was perfect. We also tried the steak quesadilla with onions, steak taco, cheese enchilada, and chicken sope--all were delicious. My mom especially enjoyed the mole sauce with her enchilada. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area for a quick, inexpensive, and tasty treat. MmMmMmMm.

Nice people, plenty of parking, the food is good. I really like this place. The only problem is that over my fifteen visits or so they goofed up my order about eighty percent of the time. Chicken instead of beef, food not ready at the same time. My wife love's the place, we'll be back

I have been there several times, and each time was pleased with the food and the service. Especially like their huevos rancheros and the HOMEMEADE chicken soup is the best balm for blue days! Service is fine, atmosphere is OK, prices are excellent. Don't expect spicy out-state mexican. Their food is traditional Mexico City mexican. Fresh and tasty.

My husband and I just moved to downtown Des Plaines from the city. We stumbled upon this place and it's better than any place we found in the city. The steak tacos, quesadilla's, and guacamole are fantastic! It's nice to find a good authentic Mexican restaurant that isn't greasy and heavy. Guacamole appetizer, two meals, and two beers came to $31.

Best tasting Mexican food in the area. Prices are great too. Staff is super nice. How can you not like this place?

Absolutely delish!!! So authentic! Don't let the stark cafeteria appearance put you off- people come here for the food not the ambiance. I suggest take out if atmosphere is really important to you. Cheers!

I was looking for a place I hadn't tried and found this on Yelp. I decided to go with Carryout. I had the Burrito Special ground beef. The Burrito was a good size. The meat was moist and had very good flavor. The salsa that was given to me wasn't very much, if I would have known I would have asked for extra. The rice and beans were OK. The rice was very tender and cooked just right, though it could have used a little more flavor. The beans were just the right texture and had pretty good flavor. The people were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is very clean and simple looking inside, but this should not stop you from going here. It looks like they recently expanded and put a banquet area in. There is a good amount of parking in the back. I will be returning and will have to eat in next time.

Yet another establishment I've found myself at for lunch. The chips they brought out were good, alongside warm mild salsa or a spicier salsa. I tried the enchiladas: one pork and one beef, and it was good but not great. The beans on my plate didn't look too appetizing though and I didn't touch that. The horchata is good, but wish they were a larger size. Nice servers.

I went this evening based off of the yelp reviews. When I got in, the waitress asked me if I wanted to put my bike in their foyer since I didn't have a lock on it outside, which I thought was very nice. I ordered the chicken taco plate. 3 tacos ended up being too much food for me. The tacos were simple and good, although my corn tortillas ripped a little easier than I'd expect. The food all seemed pretty cheap too.

After a long week, I needed a trip to Mexico. My date and I went after work on a Friday, and there was a nice crowd of regulars, and a large party going on. The staff was busy, but very nice. I had the cheese enchiladas with verde sauce, and my date had the trio of tacos (al pastor, tounge and goat). We both loved our meals. The enchiladas were awesome. To me, they were like mexican comfort food. The flavor was spicy and complicated, and cheese tasted great. My date loved his tacos. As others have mentioned, he said the goat is a must have; it was his favorite taco. The weak point of the meal for me was the chips and salsa. I like my salsa a little spicier, but I can't complain to much because it was free. The best part of the meal was the price tag. $27 for two scrumptious meals, and three beers is hard to beat. We'll be back to Mexico very soon! Next time, I'll try the margaritas.

I've driven by a million times and always wondered what it was like in there. Well, I was pleasantly surprised! The food is good, not great, but good. I ordered chicken enchiladas and the red sauce was tasty, more sweet than anything else. The enchiladas, well they were bursting with chicken, there was just so much! My husband got steak enchiladas with a hot sauce and loved them. We also ordered a plate of nachos that were okay, but nothing spectacular. Their salsa that you get with the chips when you sit down is absolutely decicious too! The restaurant is family owned and operated, mom and dad work in the kitchen, adult daughters serve and the grandchildren bring the drinks and chips and stuff. This is the biggest bonus for me, when a whole family gets involved to make a business work! This is everything I think this country was founded on... and it doesn't hurt that the family is just really nice! Oh, and they allow orders off-menu, my husband ordered a few things that were't on the menu to go and they had no problem with that either.

If you love mexican food like I love mexican food than Mexico is the place to go. The food is so delicious and so reasonably priced. I always order cheese enchiladas in tomatillos sauce and the tomatillo is the absolute best. My co-workers have tried other fare and no one has ever been disappointed. They have coke in a bottle here in addition to can which one of my co-workers is particularly happy about. The food is great, the service is quick, and the staff is super nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. While the decor is a bit non-plus, the place is always very clean.

Absolutely the best Mexican Restaurant around! I was a police officer in Chicago and had a lot of Mexican food through the years. This is best , cheapest and most friendly place. Have been coming to the restaurant twenty plus years and have NEVER had a bad meal. The Cerviche Tostada is my favorite meal.

I work right across the street, so I have been here a few times. Sometimes a 3star experience and sometimes 4. I had the Quesadillas, some with steak and some with chicken. I opted for the corn tortilla which is better than the flour tortilla. Excellent! Also, they make quacamole fresh to order. Extra yummy! I get mine without cilantro and that is a real plus, compared to most places that are not made-to-order and almost always have cilantro. Help is pleasant and attentive. Very affordable!

Love this place- inexpensive, delicious and really friendly. The same faces are always working: mom and dad in the kitchen, daughters waitressing. They offer full meals (Mexican steak, chicken breasts, etc.) but I always order singles- steak taco and two enchilada verde's. Free chips and two types of salsa come with every order and their margaritas are excellent.

Cat's out of the bag on this one. 4.5 stars, not quite perfection but very good. Go at night when Nancy is there. She's the daughter of the older couple who I presume are the owners. She keeps thing right. Service can be a bit slow but that's just because in the last couple years the popularity of this place has skyrocketed. The food is very good quality, very consistent, hearty, and authentic. The place may seem a bit "sterile" but I find it to be cleaner than most MX restaurants. Some things are better than others, and again since I am not a big steak eater at MX restaurants (whereas many people EQUATE MX food with steak burritos) I am not critiquing the steak per-se. Their chicken dishes, pork chops, goat stew, green mole - all excellent. Mexico Restaurant is as good or better than city places in the Hispanic neighborhoods. Plus, no hassle with Mayor Daley's parking. And 10 minutes from home. Started coming here over 10 yrs ago, when I still lived in the city we'd come up sometimes just for this place.

I love the Mexico Restaurant. Granted the atmosphere isn't that great and the decor won't win any awards anytime soon, but the food is amazing! Everything is fresh, the portions are huge, and the wait is short. I love the fact that they give you two different salsas to start with. A more mild one and a spicy one and they keep the chips coming! I usually get the enchiladas suizas and they are amazing. Three enchiladas with your choice of filling smothered with sauce and cheese! My mom always gets the torta and she raves about it the whole time. They also have daily specials where certain menu items are offered for a special price. If you go you must get the margaritas! We usually get a pitcher and they are ridiculously cheap and huge! They are have an orange/citrus twang to them just so you know.

  • Sarah B.

The guacamole, freshly made for each order, is a little chunky and tastes delicious--easy to scoop up with their homemade chips. Everything on the menu is good, from the spicy salsa to the tacos to the enchildas to the cola in glass bottles. Downsides: the interior is tiled, floor and half-way up the walls, with bathroom-like tiles, and the paint job is pale and highlighted by fluorescent lights. I recommend take-out.

  • Adele S.

Decor is lacking. Food is excellent and blows Maria's out of the water...that's why Maria's closed, I guess! (Didn't like Maria's black bean soup...TOO SWEET!) Maria's is now a Lalo's...Mexico Restaurant blows the shit out of Lalo's too. Anyhow, I recommend a combination plate. You get red and green salsas w/ home made tortilla chips, both salsas will make you fart flames the next day. I could eat here every day but the 'rhoids would kill me.

Where to even begin???? First of all the place looks like a weird cafeteria. No one greeted us when we walked in and after sitting down by ourselves we were served a basket of chips that were beyond stale. The salsa was ok. As we sat they rolled out a huge cafeteria style rack with chips in it and dumped them under the heat lamp to trick diners into thinking they were freshly made. The food was awful. Our taco meat (steak) tasted like some odd kind of meat (not beef) overly seasoned by tenderizer to mask the fact that it was probably something other then what it claimed to be . The only thing good about thisplace was the bottle of pepsi I drank (old fashioned style glass). Not to mention that I have been physically ill since late last night but I havent been to a doctor so I cant confirm that this is from the food. But i feel it is. Do yourself a favor and stay far far away from here and dont be fooled by the other good reviews as they were probably written by the owners themselves.

I like the decor. It keeps the people away who are only there to feel like they're eating at some glitzed up hokey restaurant chain that has spent more money on sombreros than the ingredients they serve you. Born and raised in Des Plaines I miss this restaurant more than any other sinced I've moved away. Someone please have a chicken taco for me or the enchiladas suizas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
